As we flip back our
history book, way back in 1911; St. Joseph’s Hospital, Nellore was
founded. Moved by deep concern and love for the poor, sick and
suffering, Sr. Louise van de a Dutch sister by birth became the
pioneer of this institution. She devoted all her time, energy and
Talent to attend to the needs of the people of Nellore. From a
humble beginning of 2 bedded maternity center, the institution has
grown into a large mansion of 200 bed hospital, with different
specialties.
The girls of this locality, who were economically backward, found
very difficult to earn their livelihood and less opportunities for
higher education. So to help these girls, in the year 1932 our
sisters opened ANM Training Programme with the Medium of
instruction Telugu. This programme is going as very well, and most
of them are employed in various hospitals both in Government, as
well as in Private institutions with very good salaries.
Considering the need for devoted women, to assist the sick and
suffering humanity, and also St. Joseph’s is a referral Hospital
together with chapter recommendations, and demand from the local
people; we perceived the necessity of having better qualified
nurses with scientific knowledge and technical skills to give
efficient and effective care to patients, who come to our
hospital. The advancement in science and medicine made great
demands on the institution, to have high quality of dedicated
Nurses, along with scientific knowledge and skills to provide
meticulous, efficient and skilled services to the sick and
suffering humanity. These factors compelled us to start a college
of Nursing of our own, and thus the academic year 2006 saw the
birth of St. Joseph’s College of Nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital,
Nellore.
The Correspondent &
the Head Mistress of our English Medium High School was kind enough to
provide school auditorium to start the College of Nursing, as soon
as we got permission to start. The Red letter day in the history
of St. Joseph’s Hospital was the INAUGURATION of St. Joseph’s
College of Nursing, which took place on the first day of the last
month of the year. An important chapter was opened on December 1st
2006 in the history of St. Joseph’s Hospital, which is the
Inauguration of St. Joseph’s college of Nursing, which took place
in the College campus in Dargamitta in a simple ceremony.
Inaugural Holy Eucharistic service started at 6 p.m. by Most Rev.
Dr.P.C. Balaswamy Bishop of Nellore as the main celebrant. Our
Bishop highly appreciated our move forward to start a Nursing
College in Nellore, as there are no Nursing Colleges, run by the
religious sisters in Nellore Diocese.
INTAKE OF STUDENTS:
Indian
Nursing Council and Dr.NTR University has given us permission to
take 50 students in each academic year. Among 50 students, 25
students are admitted under Management Quota, they come from
different parts of India, including Bhutan, Nepal etc., and the
remaining 25 students are admitted under Government Quota, they
are local girls who will be send by the university after the 1st &
2nd counseling by the university. After the 2nd counseling, if the
seats are not filled by the university to the full capacity; the
university will send us the information to fill the Government
Quota vacancy, by taking students under Management Quota. This
intimation from the university will come to us very late and we
may not be able to get any students at that juncture, thus the
unfilled Government Quota will remain vacant. Since we got
permission very late to start the College, we have only 9 students
in the Ist batch (2006 to 2007). Unfortunately two of our students
could not continue their studies, as they were poor in studies, so
the batch is left with only 7 students.
“EVERY STUDENT IN THIS COLLEGE IS TOUCHED BY THE HAND OF HIGH
STANDARD OF EDUCATION, PROGRESS & DEVELOPMENT.”
Some of the students find it very difficult to study specially
during Ist year of their study & some of them discontinue their
studies as they have too many subjects to study as per the
syllabus, and they are not able to cope up with their studies, inspite of our best efforts.
“As the students join St. Joseph’s College of Nursing, Classes
are arranged for a special coaching in English”
LAMP LIGHTING CEREMONY:
Soon after admission of the new students to the college, students
are given very strict Training in an artificial setting in the
various laboratories, together with strict theory instructions in
the class room, before they are posted to the clinical area, where
they will be handling the most precious human life. On the
completion of their training for 4 months in the college, they
have the Lamp Lighting Ceremony, where they receive that Divine
Light and make a pledge to serve the Sick & Suffering people of
God with greater Commitment & enthusiasm.
CLINICAL EXPERIENCE:
We have our own hospital and our students are having very good
clinical experience in our St. Joseph’s Hospital, Nellore. Besides
this experience, our senior Students are given opportunity to have
super specialty clinical experience, where they will learn to take
care of very major cases including assisting for major surgeries
in our hospital in Bangalore (St. Philomena’s Hospital,
Bangalore). Our students are really privileged to have such good
clinical experience with latest technologies & advanced methods of
treatment with sophisticated equipments. Students also have their Psychiatric Nursing care experience in
Cadabam’s Hospital, Bangalore. We are grateful to our DM & HO for giving permission for our
students, to have their urban & rural community Health Nursing
experience in the Government primary Health Centre.
